Where are you in your run?
Pick your situation — get the player-tested move.
Lower your eyes and stay completely still. Meeting its gaze, approaching confidently, or drawing a weapon are the most common ways players die. Your first dragon is almost never your dragon — survive it and move on.
First encounter survival table →Scene-by-scene answers
Stage 2 · Right after entering the valley
First Dragon Encounter
Your first dragon is drawn from a pool set by how you entered (alone or with squadmates) and which direction you walked. It is almost never your dragon — the only goal here is to stay alive.
Stage 3 · After the first encounter
The Screams in the Forest
You pass the ashes of other candidates and hear fighting — a squadmate being bullied. How you handle this may echo later: community route maps link mercy here to green/brown bonds, and ruthlessness to red/orange bonds.
Stage 4-5 · Climb the tallest tree, descend slowly
The Two Greens Clearing
The deadliest scene in the game. Two green dragons watch you. Hesitation and split attention are punished harder here than anywhere else.
Stage 4-5 · Climb the tallest tree, descend fast
Red Dragon at Your Feet
You come down the tree fast and land at a red dragon's feet. It is not in a patient mood.
Stage 5-6 · Keep walking to the center of the valley
Red Dragon at the Valley Heart
The most reliable bond in the game. A red dragon waits at the valley's center, and it is genuinely considering you.
Stage 6-7 · After declining the valley-heart red
The Meadow (Orange & Brown)
Orange and brown dragons graze here. Both can be bonded, but orange is the least predictable dragon in the game — and a blue dragon sometimes spawns alongside them.
Stage 4-5 · Third option at the treetop (random)
Follow the Shadow
The only known door to black and blue dragons. After climbing the tallest tree, a third option — follow the shadow — appears at random. Players report first seeing it anywhere from attempt 16 to never.
Know your dragons
Black
The rarest and most selective. Cunning, patient, and utterly unsentimental.
Blue
Cold, powerful, and exacting. Blues test you and remember how you behaved.
Green
Rational and intellectual. Greens respect honesty and punish evasion.
Red
Hot-tempered but fiercely loyal once bonded.
Orange
Unpredictable. Oranges burn more players at random than any other color.
Brown
Steady and underestimated. Browns rescue players other dragons reject.
Black dragon route
The shadow door, the chain of choices, and what 26 attempts taught players.
Blue dragon routes
Two reported paths — the shadow route and the new meadow spawn.
Retry timer
Burned? Track the 4-hour wait and come back on time.
Easter egg found
A hidden countdown points to May 2027
Players discovered a secret timer on dragonkind.com — likely counting down to signets. Here is how to find it, and the live countdown.

What is the Dragonkind game?
Dragonkind is the official free browser game by Rebecca Yarros, set in the world of Fourth Wing. You play a rider candidate entering Threshing Valley, making choices to survive and bond a dragon. It launched October 1, 2026 at dragonkind.com, alongside the Threshing Day story collection.
How long do you wait after dying in Dragonkind?
About 4 hours. Every death restarts the full wait, and there is no way to skip it. Retries are unlimited — check the countdown on your ending screen and use our retry timer to track it.
Is the Dragonkind timer 4 minutes or 4 hours?
4 hours. The countdown reads hours:minutes, not minutes:seconds — "3:58" means nearly 4 hours remain, not 4 minutes. This is the most common misreading among new players.
Is there a guaranteed route or answer key?
No. The developers release no answer key, and randomness is built in — the same choices have produced bonds and burns for different players. This guide tracks player-reported outcomes and marks every claim with a confidence level instead of promising certainty.
